North Korea has called US President Barack Obama a "monkey with a red bum" in racist comments following his visit to South Korea, earlier this month.

The Stalinist regime ruled by Kim Jong-un also compared Obama to an ape who has failed to evolve with the rest of the human race.

The comments were issued by the official news agency of the hermit kingdom and were swiftly condemned as "ugly and disrespectful".

Attacking South Korean president Park Guen-hye for hosting Obama, the Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted citizens condemning him.

"How Obama looks like makes me disgusted," one apparently said.

"As I watch him more closely, I realise that he looks like an African native monkey with a black face, gaunt grey eyes, hollowed out nostrils, plump mouth and hairy rough ears."

The racist comments translated by website NK News continued: "He acts just like a monkey with a red bum irrationally eating everything - not only from the floor but also from trees here and there."

North Korea observers said the heated tone of the rhetoric adopted by North Korea marked a departure from the past and an escalation in language used.

Further offensive comments were translated by blogger Josh Stanton, a watcher of the isolated Communist regime.

They read: "[President] Park made waste water-like reckless remarks... after inviting her American master reminiscent of a wicked black monkey to visit South Korea."

Obama was described as "a crossbreed with unclear blood". The comments added that Obama "has the figure of a monkey while the human race has evolved through millions of years".

The offence continued when the regime mouthpiece stated that the US President "does not even have the basic appearance of a human being".

Elsewhere, South Korean president Park was branded an "old prostitute".

US National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said: "While the North Korean Government-controlled media are distinguished by their histrionics, these comments are particularly ugly and disrespectful."
