Japanese automakers Honda Motor, Nissan Motor and Mazda have recalled over two million vehicles to repair potentially faulty airbags and the decision follows a similar move by rival Toyota Motor earlier in the month.

Honda's recall covers 2.03 million vehicles, including the Fit compact the world over, the carmaker said in a statement on 23 June.

Nissan's recall covers about 130,000 vehicles, including the Cube.

Mazda said it is recalling 159,807 vehicles worldwide.

The recalls aim to fix defective airbag inflators made by Japanese firm Takata.

Takata's stock finished 2.88% higher at 2,111 yen in Tokyo on 23 June, after striking 2,133 yen in intra-day trade, as news of the widespread recalls came in only during the afternoon trading session.

The recalls bring the total number of vehicles fitted with defective Takata airbags to more than four million units.

Toyota Recall

On 11 June, Toyota Motor said it would recall nearly 650,000 vehicles in Japan to deal with potentially faulty airbags, after Takata warned that further repairs could be needed.

The vehicles covered by the Toyota recall include the Corolla and Camry sedans and Tundra trucks.

Toyota also said it will instruct dealers in the US and other markets to start replacing suspect Takata inflators on all vehicles covered by a 2013 recall, which involved 2.14 million vehicles, reported Reuters.

Toyota has received one report of a seat-cover burn linked to supposedly defective airbag inflators.
