South Korean Ferry Made Abrupt Sharp Turn Before Capsizing

The South Korean ferry, Sewol, took an abrupt sharp right turn before capsizing off the country's southern coast, even as rescuers renew search for the hundreds of missing people who were aboard the ship.

The new finding is based on the track chart of the vessel.

"We're trying to find out whether the Sewol lost balance and capsized when it was making a sharp turn, considering that its centre of gravity had become high as a result of an increase of cabins in the stern session. It's possible that the ship made a sharp turn to avoid an object suddenly looming out of the fog," said a coast guard spokesperson.

Investigators earlier suspected that the 6,825-tonne passenger vessel had hit rocks, but there is no indication of this.

The ship, with 475 passengers, mostly students, was sailing in familiar waters from the mainland port of Incheon to the southern resort of Jeju.

The death toll has increased to 26 and 270 others remain unaccounted for while 179 have been rescued.

It has been more than 48 hours since the vessel went down. The search and rescue measures have been hampered by bad weather.

"We are planning to relay divers on standby for underwater search operations. We've ordered the service members to carry out the job up to the limit," said a military official, according to Seoul's Yonhap news agency.

Park Jae-eok, an investigating official, briefed reporters on the allegation that the captain had abandoned the ship as soon as it started sinking.

"The captain had a third mate be in charge of steering the vessel at the time of the accident. Though surviving crews have difference testimonies about the situation, we've been investigating the captain as he was suspected to leave the steering room for an unknown reason."

Satan Cult Foster Parents Locked Girl in Garage with Dog and Monkey for Nine Years

A girl who was beaten, starved and imprisoned with a dog and a monkey in a garage from the age of six for nine years by her foster parents has been rescued by Argentinian police.

The girl, who weighed just 20kg (44lb) when she was found in the garage in Buenos Aires, said she had been fed only bread and water.

Now 15, she said she was repeatedly beaten with a belt if she tried to eat the leftover food thrown to the pets in the garage.

According to officials, her foster parents took the girl into care provisionally in 2001 after a court found that her biological parents, who had seven more children, were financially unable to look after her, the BBC reported.

The girl was found after one of her biological sisters raised the alarm.

Her biological family lost track of her after 2005.

The child has been taken to a local hospital for treatment. Her would-be guardians have been arrested and charged with slavery and abuse.

Her foster parents were awaiting for the girl's adoption papers to be finalised when she was found.

They were reported to be devotees of St Death, or Santa Muerte, a female saint venerated by millions of people in South America.

Santa Muerte is associated with healing, protection, love and safe delivery to the afterlife by her followers.

The Vatican and the Protestant church in Mexico have condemned the cult of Santa Muerte as satanic and anti-religious.

India Elections 2014: Busiest Day of the World's Biggest Vote

Indians are voting on the biggest day of the country's general elections, with nearly 200 million people eligible to cast their ballots in 12 states.

Voters streamed into polling stations across the vast country, from the western desert state of Rajasthan to the tea-growing Himalayan areas in the east; and from the troubled state of Kashmir in the north to the technology hub of Bangalore in the south.

Nationwide voting began April 7 and runs through to May 12, with results expected to be announced four days later.

Testament, published by Powerhouse Books, is a collection of his powerful photographs and writing, spanning more than a decade of coverage from some of the world's major conflict zones, including Liberia, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti and Libya. Proceeds from sales of the book go to the Chris Hondros Fund, which supports the work of conflict photographers and aims to increase awareness of issues that arise from reporting in war zones.

In this gallery, we present a retrospective of Hondros' work.
