The RAF has launched a military probe after photos emerged which appear to show a UK serviceman posing with the dead body of a Taliban fighter.

The pictures, first published on website Liveleak, depict at least one UK serviceman with thumbs-up over the body of a Taliban.

They were taken in the aftermath of an attack by insurgents on Camp Bastion, the main British base in Afghanistan, in 2012, according to the BBC.

The Ministry of Defence said that military police were investigating.

An RAF spokesman said it had a "zero-tolerance policy on the mistreatment of deceased enemy personnel" and the case was being treated "extremely seriously".

"We can confirm that the incident is currently subject to an ongoing RAF Police investigation and therefore, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time," he added.

Two RAF Regiment members have already been removed from frontline duties.
